Monitors stormwater systems with smart solution from Wideco
A fight against floods and water intrusion is not only costly but can also jeopardize the property’s structure and the safety of tenants. Therefore, it is crucial to find effective and sustainable solutions to manage these challenges. By focusing on monitoring and understanding these issues, property owners can create a safer and more sustainable environment.
The house, built in 1992, has a sump pit approximately 3 meters deep with two drainage pipes connected to the well. When the pump, which pumps water to the municipal stormwater system, intermittently fails, there is a significant risk that the drainage system and the well will fill up, resulting in water intrusion into the basement below ground level. Such water intrusion can lead to damage to the tenants’ stored belongings.
Solution
To address the problem of water intrusion and flooding in the sump pit, an innovative solution from Wideco, the Widetect A1 Portable is used. This solution is specifically designed to operate in hard-to-reach spaces like the current sump pit.
The Widetect A1 is mounted on a pole adjusted to the proper height for the location. It is equipped with two float switches: one low and one high. The low float activates immediately when the pump stops working, which means the property owner receives an instant warning that something is wrong. The high float activates when the water level has risen significantly, indicating that emergency pumping is needed.
The device is connected via 4G to Wideco’s IoT platform, WISION. When either float switch is activated, notifications are immediately sent via SMS or email to responsible persons. This system ensures that appropriate actions can be taken quickly to prevent damage and water intrusion.
By implementing this solution, property owners can effectively monitor and manage the stormwater system, reducing the risk of costly damages and ensuring a safe and sustainable environment for tenants.
Implementation
When implementing Widetect A1, several important steps are taken to ensure optimal functionality and effective monitoring of the sump pit.
Initial Tests and Measurements
Upon arrival at the site, various tests of the sump pit are conducted. The lengths for high and low alarms are carefully measured to ensure the float switches alert at the correct water levels. These measurements are critical to ensuring the device activates at the right time, preventing potential flooding.
Forcing the Water Level
To verify that the entire alarm chain functions properly, the water level in the sump pit is forced. By deliberately raising and lowering the water level, both the low and high float switches can be tested to ensure they activate correctly and that alarm notifications are sent out immediately.
Connectivity and Monitoring
Widetect A1 is a plug-and-play device, pre-configured and connected to Wideco’s IoT platform, WISION. From this platform, the system can be monitored, and notifications can be sent directly via SMS or email in case of any alarms.
Final Check and Commissioning
A final check is performed to ensure all components are working as they should. Once everything is verified and ready, the system is put into operation. The property owner can now continuously monitor the stormwater system and take swift action when necessary.
